Yeah...like that!! Who's next? 3 words or 3 paragraphs, don't matter, let's do this.

Laure -- Tuesday, March 28 2006, 08:53 pm

Other than loving his phrasing, his tone and amazing technics, Doug has absorbed any influences he has had and it translates into a unic style. Most bass players have either a strong right hand or a left, he was able to train both to maximum efficiency. Between his two hands tapping, slapping/popping/, funk feel, jazz feel, finger 'drumming', all technics a bass guitarist can master has been covered, revisited and brought to a whole new level. As one of the pioneer of Hip Hop, he remains on the edge of technology. He is an artist in its true rights who can incorporate electronika, a zest of ethnicity, a teaspoon of world music and rock into the cocktail we call talent, taping into all genres effortlessly and beautifully. His choices of notes are always impeccable and inspired. As a songwritter he insightfully understands melody and groove. Either when he solos or lays out a groove, he knows how to let his ego down yet stand out. Doug's uses his amazing knowledge and good taste to always humbly serves the music and song composition and bring the listener into a sonic journey as well as challenging his bandmates to excel and reach new musical heights! Onstage, his skills takes their full dimension as he is, not only the musical genius we all come to respect and love, but he is also a delightful, hypnotic performer and lively, humourous entertainer, . After near 30 years of career, I believe Doug has only given us a glimpse of what he is truly about and I'm looking forward to see what else he has in store for us... To be continued...

Teecha -- Monday, March 27 2006, 08:52 pm

Let's have a little fun. You are on Doug's site because you obviously like something about him or his bass playing. So....come on let's share your thoughts and feelings. 1) What about his playing do you like? 2) What bass line or loop, which he is credited with performing do you like? For example, I love the intro to "Wall" I love the way he uses several pedal and effects on a very short, funky, expressive line and I love the ending gliss with what I think was a whammy pedal. Your turn.

I keep waiting for a code word that I can recognize to try to jump in and type a message or two. I typed a nice paragraph once or twice only to get to the code word and...well I was just too frustrated to try again. This time I am NOT going to put spaces between the letters of the word to be typed whe n I kno w the word is not suppos e to have a space. Look, go to the "Image" page. Got a few pics for you. Check out the short video of Doug showing his stuff at his myspace.com site. Laure, Laure, Laure...NICE! Heah... I did it.

brenda peavy -- Wednesday, March 15 2006, 03:21 pm

there were two creeps standing behind me that kept saying that they didn't "get" what was going on?"i started to tell them wait another 5 years -but it was not worth the trouble when you have a couple of ass-holes in the crowd-so they didn't get it what is our life not valid because "THEY" don't get it? "THEY DIDN'T GET IT" when we started doing rap so?there always has to one or since they work better in crowds two - and who asked them? the sad part is that they don't get how someone could be so talented and have people appreicate that talent - because they don't have it and can't stand that someone with brown-skin does!!!?it was good to see that my son has such a strong support system in connecticut-while i'm stuck in up state ny were THEY wanted to take jamie out of the gifted and talented program in 1986?FUNK ON, FUNK ON, FUNK ON!!!!!!!!!!!!! So Phil has been working hard re-constructing this site. He still has his yellow construction hat on and building materials are all over the place, look, there are pictures of Doug, living Colour, Head>>Fake, Tack>>Head, and Doug's gear, all over the the floor waiting to be put up. Oooops, step over that and watch out for the CDs. Careful with those masters from the vault. Man that stuff sounds good. Since the last time I heard that stuff, and you know I had a demo...SOMEBODY, and I ain't mentioning any names... (Doug) went back and added more to the tracks...Doug!!! you have to let 'em hear it. Who has the combination to the vault? Phil can you open it up or do we have to wait for Doug? Is that Skip on guitar? Meanwhile in another room...Oh, did you see that? Phil just knock down the gallery wall with an HTML sledge hammer, dust settled and look, new pictues up on the nice grey gallery walls.

CPJ -- Sunday, March 5 2006, 06:57 pm

everyone assumes life is easy, wherever that assumption comes from, i think people in general have a habit of protecting others, especially loved ones from experiencing the harsh realities of life. by so-doing, we give them the impression(illusion) that life is but simple. we cant be seen to be cruel by exposing each other of the wrath that life brings. but thats what it is... another LC FAN -- Tuesday, December 6 2005, 01:15 pm

Fantastic turnout lastnight at the Chicago House of Blues. Much better than the previous show at The Park West. The setlist was top notch. About half of Vivid was played and 2-3 songs from each of their other albums. Highlights included a killer version of Tomorrow Never Knows for the encore, Flying, Go Away and Funny Vibe. Thanks again LC for a killer show and I look forward to your return. Peace.

LC Fan -- Tuesday, December 6 2005, 12:25 pm

Went to the House of Blues Show last nite. It was Good show, but not their best. It was partly the crowd's fault.. They kinda sucked.. It was full but not totally energetic. But Corey didn't get the crowd going much either.. Perhaps I was expecting them to repeat their Chicago show of a couple years ago at the Metro... Best Ever!! Oh well I still love'em.. One last thing, they should never play their "Tommorow Never Knows" cover again..

Hey Doug and Will,

I can just say I was glad the show at the Aalen festival happened after all. I was't quite sure what to expect - when I was told you were to play ther I thought, maybe that's like Jungle Funk minus one, but what you did went far beyond that. I was totally blown away.

Cheers, Frank

PS: now of course I hope it won't be too long until I get to see Jungle Funk and Living Colour.

Lionel -- Thursday, October 20 2005, 11:49 pm

Okay, so we had a little fun but all joking aside, Doug said to me tonight, while packing to go to New York for the MUSIC PLAYER LIVE event at the Crown Plaza on 10-22-05, that all the Living Colour band members are tight (no problems). So all the fans should relax until the knowledge is dropped. I also spoke briefly with Doug about the Vanity Fair article on Hip Hop. I jokingly called him Doug "Gangster" Wimbish and asked if the song "Gangster" cut #4 from his Trippy Notes For Bass solo CD had anything to do with that issue, you know as a writer reflecting, that sort of thing. Doug answered by stating that his career has crossed paths with people that were gangter like in character, but he (Doug) has always tried to maintain a balance of peace and love. It's the Dougalow way. I will share some more of our conversation and drop a picture or two for the die hard fans.

However, seeing that the site will be designed with the fans in mind, we thought it would be a good idea for you to tell us what you would like to see included on the site. Share you thoughts at teechalcm@aol.com.

Steven Ho -- Sunday, October 2 2005, 02:04 pm

You're right: he's using both. The AirFX processes the AirSynth, that's why he needs both hands... Both Airtools are great for freestyling in open air :-)

Dog -- Sunday, October 2 2005, 12:07 pm

Not to split hairs, but could what Doug was using in concert be an Alesis AirSynth and not an Air FX? The Air FX processes the signal - Doug's bass signal - while the AirSynth operates without the bass signal or any external signal running through it. When I saw Doug (and Corey) use whateever they had, it, I'm pretty sure Doug's signal wasn't being processed, but I've been wrong before. Also, it is possible Doug had both devices - it was hard to tell. Thanks.

In a recent LC concert, Doug used an effect that was operating by raising and lowering his hand above the device which caused the sound to vary creating a very spacey sound, a la Sun Ra perhaps. Does anyone know what this might be? Thanks.

Really enjoyed watching Doug play with Living Colour in Eugene on Tuesday. New song "The Blessed?" was one of the show highlights for me and I'm sure it was the longest song of the evening. Very Soulful. I've seen the band a few times before - but this was the best. Thanks for coming to our small venue, Doug....

I guess you mean 'Bless Those', by the new song. It's a great tune. You can find it on some compilations by Adrian Sherwood. In fact it's an older song from 'Little Annie'.

Clarence ''Gatemouth'' Brown, the singer and guitarist who built a 50-year career playing blues, country, jazz and Cajun music, died Saturday in his hometown of Orange, Texas, where he had gone to escape Hurricane Katrina. He was 81.

Brown, who had been battling lung cancer and heart disease, was in ill health for the past year, said Rick Cady, his booking agent.

Cady said the musician was with his family at his brother's house when he died. Brown's home in Slidell, La., a bedroom community of New Orleans, was destroyed by Katrina, Cady said.

''He was completely devastated,'' Cady said. ''I'm sure he was heartbroken, both literally and figuratively. He evacuated successfully before the hurricane hit, but I'm sure it weighed heavily on his soul.''

Although his career first took off in the 1940s with blues hits ''Okie Dokie Stomp'' and ''Ain't That Dandy,'' Brown bristled when he was labeled a bluesman.

In the second half of his career, he became known as a musical jack-of-all-trades who played a half-dozen instruments and culled from jazz, country, Texas blues, and the zydeco and Cajun music of his native Louisiana.

By the end of his career, Brown had more than 30 recordings and won a Grammy award in 1982.

''I'm so unorthodox, a lot of people can't handle it,'' Brown said in a 2001 interview.

Brown's versatility came partly from a childhood spent in the musical mishmash of southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas. He was born in Vinton, La., and grew up in Orange, Texas.

Brown often said he learned to love music from his father, a railroad worker who sang and played fiddle in a Cajun band. Brown, who was dismissive of most of his contemporary blues players, named his father as his greatest musical influence.

''If I can make my guitar sound like his fiddle, then I know I've got it right,'' Brown said.

Cady said Brown was quick-witted, ''what some would call a 'codger.'''

Brown started playing fiddle by age 5. At 10, he taught himself an odd guitar picking style he used all his life, dragging his long, bony fingers over the strings.

In his teens, Brown toured as a drummer with swing bands and was nicknamed ''Gatemouth'' for his deep voice. After a brief stint in the Army, he returned in 1945 to Texas, where he was inspired by blues guitarist T-Bone Walker.

Brown's career took off in 1947 when Walker became ill and had to leave the stage at a Houston nightclub. The club owner invited Brown to sing, but Brown grabbed Walker's guitar and thrilled the crowd by tearing through ''Gatemouth Boogie'' -- a song he claimed to have made up on the spot.

He made dozens of recordings in the 1940s and '50s, including many regional hits -- ''Okie Dokie Stomp,'' ''Boogie Rambler,'' and ''Dirty Work at the Crossroads.''

But he became frustrated by the limitations of the blues and began carving a new career by recording albums that featured jazz and country songs mixed in with the blues numbers.

''He is one of the most underrated guitarists, musicians and arrangers I've ever met, an absolute prodigy,'' said Colin Walters, who is working on Brown's biography. ''He is truly one of the most gifted musicians out there.

''He never wanted to be called a bluesman, but I used to tell him that though he may not like the blues, he does the blues better than anyone,'' added Walters. ''He inherited the legacy of great bluesmen like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, but he took what they did and made it better.''

Brown -- who performed in cowboy boots, cowboy hat and Western-style shirts -- lived in Nashville in the early 1960s, hosting an R&B television show and recording country singles.

In 1979, he and country guitarist Roy Clark recorded ''Makin' Music,'' an album that included blues and country songs and a cover of the Billy Strayhorn-Duke Ellington classic ''Take the A-Train.''

Brown recorded with Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt and others, but he took a dim view of most musicians -- and blues guitarists in particular. He called B.B. King one-dimensional. He dismissed his famous Texas blues contemporaries Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland as clones of T-Bone Walker, whom many consider the father of modern Texas blues.

''All those guys always tried to sound like T-Bone,'' Brown said.

Maria is the 13th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, one of the busiest on record.

Historically, only about four or five named storms form by this time of year, according to the hurricane center. Peak storm activity typically occurs from the end of August through mid-September. The season began June 1 and ends Nov. 30. greenhouse gas effect people are going to have to stop driving so much - because these storms are going to get worse as the planet gets warmer and warmer - i mean people have been talking about for 30 years or more - just like the movie "day after tomorrow" - the shit is happening!!!! obviously some one has not learned that you can't play around with nature or it will wipe all of the people out to clean itself up? Carlos Bill -- Sunday, June 26 2005, 04:21 pm

Rio de Janeiro, June 26th 2005-- Hello, dear Doug Wimbish. It's such an enormous, unusual feel and a deeper pleasure to contacting you. I'm Carlos Bill, 43 years old, and I have always been very, very impressed with your electrifying bass playing - your speeded up improvisations, accurate fingerings and fat intonation, making your bass style as one of the more excitings I ever saw. Having been Living Colour's bass player, as well as Rolling Stones' and Jeff Beck, makes me feel really interested because you are so strong both in jazz, rock as r&b fields - I can even immagine your fresh fingering "adaptations" when probably playing SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL or a Joe satriani's more avant-garde thing! Anyway, it's advanced improvisation for me, Doug, what really fascinates me. My bass is the black Ibanez SGRD, made in Korea, active 4 string. My website is: www.theoldblues.weblogger.com.br In the link NOVEMBRO 2004 (of ARQUIVOS), you can see me playing, Doug Wimbish. Now, I'll give to you the website of Rio's Canec?o Auditorium (I was born and live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil): www.canecao.com.br Fax: (55 21) 2541-8395; phone:(55 21) 2105-2000. Buddy Guy, Miles Davis (1974-1986), Joe Satriani, Mike Stern...these artists perfoprmed in there, beyond hundreds of others. Canec?o stays very near to Copacabana Beach, where Lenny Kravitz did a great concert over the sands of Copacabana Beach a few months ago, but...oh God, Doug, you and your band WILL PERFORM A MUCH MORE ELECTRIFYING, GREATER SHOW, GIVEN YOUR EXCITING BASS RUNS AND IMPROVISATIONS. I have always been a great admirer of the "two kinds" bass player: the one who solos alone onstage, and the one who plays his role traditionally. Of course, you, Jack Bruce, and other bassmen do it as masterpieces in their playings! I'll too give to you the e-mail of S?o Paulo (a brazilian city) born Joe Soares: He interviews cleverly their invited artists, Doug, and Buddy Guy, Mike Stern, Deep Purple and hundreds of other artists have been there; they can play at least two songs during the TV show,Doug...Well, I'll close now. My e-mail is: Please, Doug, e-mail me back as soon as you can. Your formidable, ecletic style will teach me much more now, but words can do it either, in another spirit, you see...congratulations, sincerely, Carlos Bill.

Hey, don't be mislead by that amazon 'warning' I contacted Rockhouse about this and they didn't know about it: they ensured me the DVD is region 0 encoded and so can be viewed anywhere on any DVD-player. I live in Belgium and the DVD works on my player. Buy it without any doubt!

-- Saturday, May 14 2005, 01:39 pm

You can still buy it and have it transcode by a professional in the format of the Uk. It's pretty pricey but it's better than nothing.

great doug, it's too much time that i don't see you live. the last time was in the 2001 with living colour in a little city of the sicily, Cefal?, exactly at the Dafne Arena. i never never see a concert great like this, if you remember was a strange concert for a few people about 50-60 fan in a little place. it was like a private concert for a private party of friends. i can't never forget it. after i see you in Catania at Villa Bellini. But the Cefal? concert was magik and unbeliveable. a few years before i see you with jungle funk in Palermo, at agricantus, a small club in the center of the city. another incredible situation, with a little group of fan very near to you, at the end i can touch your hands. i was in front of you and i stay in this position for all the concert, and i had eyes only for you. i think that you understand this and for this reason at the end of the concert you leave the bass and immediatly you went to me for take my hands before go way. i cry if i remember this. however, when i can see you a new time in italy?? or better, in Sicily?? thank you forever Doug.

Dood toss us a bone. How about an MP3 download of 'Terrorism' Please! I need it! Thanks again and cheers Sjd http://www.studiosjd.com

Stiv-O -- Sunday, April 24 2005, 02:40 pm

Fantastic gig with the legendary Bernie Worrell in Boston @ Museum of fine Arts 4/23/05 to celebrate the great documentary 'Stranger: Bernie worrell on earth' an amazing tribute to the great unsung hero of the keyboard. {a must see film} Cheers to Bernie Worrell. Cheers to Will and Doug, probably the greatest rythm section since, hmm I dunno, Keith and Doug. Cheers Doug-a-low and good to see you man! Steven http://www.studiosjd.com

Steven H -- Thursday, April 21 2005, 02:15 am

Hey Doug, at the Music fair in Frankfurt I met the people from Trace Elliot. Seems like they're back in business. Any chance you will be switching back to a full TE bassrig?

NOI -- Wednesday, April 20 2005, 12:44 am

I hope does not bother to you that a very small message writes to you, invading your Web site.single it wanted to know if you have space in your square of email of yahoo to receive a photo.a kiss.

Matt Boynton -- Saturday, April 16 2005, 10:30 am

Hey Doug, I'll be providing your backline bass rig for the MFA Bernie Worrell film festival gig next Saturday. I've got a Yorkville Bassmaster which is clean and loud, but I can also put a Trace preamp in front and just use the Yorky as a power amp. This will go through a Bergantino 3X10 which if you haven't played one I garuntee it will blow your mind. It's the cure to disembodied tweeter syndrome. Is there anything else you'll be needing?

Lionel -- Friday, April 15 2005, 06:45 am

Henny: I finally got it right. Point well made, but http://www.mitsoura.com says it all. Now that's a nice web site. The sound and photo designs are great. Kudos. I guess Doug truely works with the best. If you want to read more about Doug read the article "Rock To Rap" at http://www.lionelcrawford.com/innerviews_dougwimbish.html.

Gulo Čar is the name of the band doug was helping produce. Brought up in a lively but rundown area of Brno, where the city's white- and brown-skinned inhabitants mixed freely, this multicultural band, fronted by female singer Irena Horv?thov?, draws on both Romany (Gypsy) and modern pop music influences.

The nine-piece band plays energetic funky soul music strongly influenced by Gypsy melodies and harmonies.

hey man. heard your stuff in the colonial cousins record. in particular the opening track of the album. that was one of the best bass-intro in a song that i have ever heard. could you tell me if you used a processor to get that sound or were you playing clean ? also, which guitar were you playing? i am an amateur bassist and i play a kramer focus. i have been unable to sleep the last few nights trying to figure out how you played that.

Oh I get it, they have week end custody!

ric -- Wednesday, January 5 2005, 01:55 pm

chilli peppers have weekend since the early 90s.

Curious -- Wednesday, January 5 2005, 01:50 pm

Ric, Does music have to be 'in and now' to be good? Is it a fashion trend, a piece of clothes you wear a season and throw away the next?

Ric -- Wednesday, January 5 2005, 09:26 am

Isn't fishbone dead? aren't the Chili Peppers played out?

Sam -- Tuesday, January 4 2005, 11:22 pm

Yes, a big US festival would be nice for LC...Someone mentioned over on SG they should tour with Fishbone and Chilli Peppers..That would be massive exposure for LC and fishbone!

Dave Carr -- Tuesday, January 4 2005, 07:04 pm

Hello Mr Wimbish We were very fortunate to watch you perform in Tilburg on Monday 8th. We were standing at the very front(to your left). I was the Zimbabwean lady who requested Flying and which you subsequently performed. An absolutely mesmerizing performance, particularly your solo piece in "Terrorism" You have yet again managed to write some very thought provoking lyrics supported by an amazing baseline and effects. A pleasure to witness. I hope you will tour Zimbabwe some day.

Steven H -- Friday, October 22 2004, 07:09 am

I've got the Vivid, Time's Up & Stain scores and tabs as a book, so you must be able to find those at the musicbookstore. I don't think Collideoscope is available (yet?)

CPJ -- Friday, October 22 2004, 12:00 am

The full list is posted on my band Stanley Maxwell's website here: http://www.stanleymaxwell.com/news.html If you would be so kind as to pass this info along to your contacts in Hartford, it would be greatly appreciated. Take care and enjoy life - you sounded great with Mos Def on Letterman and Leno :) Sincerely, Andy Chatfield

Doug, just an awesome peformance on The Late Show the other night!! Loved the band as a whole too, but a lot of my attention was on you and your bass playing! from a musicians perspective (me being a drummer) you were brillant musically. You were able to pull off things in one song that most musicians could only dream of. Did I hear a few Digitech whammy pedal sounds in there?

Don't look for CHAMPAGNE & GRITS under Skip Mc DOnald, TACK>>HEAD or Doug Wimbish. Search out LITTLE AXE (Skip's band). There's a prev release from 2002, HARD TO GRIND, so it's not really a new band. Looks like an import.

Thanks for the Tack>>Head pics PFunk!! All you have to do though is copy this url to see them: http://albums.photo.epson.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=4239597&a=31414567&f=

I wish I could have been there:( Discovery Tack>>Head through Doug and Living Colour..I remeber in 1996 I first heard Tack>>Head in a used cd store and fell in love with the band..I have since got all their cd's and even Little Axe. Just wanted to say show some love and Tack>>Head means a lot and is just as important as Living Colour was if not more to music.

Hi Doug, I'm the English guy you met a few times on the recent LC dates in Czech Republic (Brno and Ostrava). The shows were really something to remember and everybody is talking about them here. Thanks so much for letting me in to catch the soundcheck in Ostrava it was great. Thanks again for the great music and taking the time out to have a chat before and after the show. Good luck with the shows in Brazil and hope to catch up with you next time you're in Czech Republic. All the best. Julian Goodwin

Hi Doug! I saw your concert in Warsaw (04.04.04 - magic date:)) It was really great! I know that U know that, but I just wanted to say, that this accident with mineral water bottle - it was NOT your fault. My friend is just crazy. It was someone else from your 'back' band. It was very ambarasing- but anyway - I could see you all a little bit longer:) By the way - her mouth is OK now. Take care. PEACE anetka/poland

Dearest Doug!

So great(the croatian show) and so disappointed(me). Let me explain. I'm the Italy JUNGLE FUNK fan, my wife and me were together at your show, I think you will remember me. Just said HI in Zagreb after the show and there goes my disappointment = you guys were in MY country and you were always VERY kind to me. I wanted to PAY IT ALL BACK, to be your tour-guide for the day and to finish the day with the nicest possible supper that can be. Everything was ready, the van, the tour, the table reservations, and mail was written for you(of course I did not want to force anything if your schedule didn't permit it). The mail was never sent because 20 days before the show I lost my job. Words can not describe the state I was (I am) in. That's why I just said hello and leave.

My best regards to all of you guys! I hope you had fun in Croatia(T-shirt was a blast)!

'Till next time/fan and friend forever/PEACE !

Robert

Hey, Doug, I just arrived back home after your Living Colour show at Alte Feuerwache in Mannheim/Germany. It was a revelation. Me and my friend were just floored. He could grab one of Will's sticks and I occasionally met Will and Corey in front of the bus and got their autograph. Unfortunately I couldn't meet you for a moment. Thanks guys for getting together again, making the record and playing this amazing show. Take good care. And stay with us, promise?! Make dozens of records. A, and my friend told me he's got a jungle funk record. We're gonna listen to that together immediately. C Ya.
